before the big day

Please have the following provided for me to use throughout the day:

- Wooden hangers (at least one for your wedding dress, and more if you'd like one for each of the bridesmaid dresses. They are inexpensive and always available at Walmart & Target)

-An extra set of Save the Dates & Wedding invitations (not mandatory, but I like to style detail shots with them if they are available).

-Extra flowers &/or greenery (like 3 or 4 pieces) that are the same as your wedding bouquet (not mandatory, but I like to style detail shots with them if they are available).

-Please designate a person(s) who knows BOTH families to help me gather people for family photos. Please introduce me to this person at the start of our day!

-Make sure ALL family is aware of when & where they need to be for family photos. (Bonus tip: if they need to be there at 1:30, tell them to be there at 1:15, people are always running behind on wedding days)

-If there are any divorces or scenarios I need to be aware of, please message me with all the details.

for the bride:

-When getting ready have only the essential people there. It’s important to start your day with people who make you feel relaxed and comfortable.

-Avoid spray tans (they can be extremely tricky to make look right on camera)

-False lashes look AMAZING on camera, so I love when clients wear them!

-If you are wearing a strapless dress, remember to wear a strapless bra in the morning to avoid lines on your skin.

-Please have your dress, shoes, veil, flowers, rings, jewelry, perfume and any other important detail items organized together and easily accessible for when I arrive. I always start with detail shots, so please have them ready by my arrival time.

-Pick who you'd like to zip/button/lace up your dress and make sure they know they need to be fully dressed with hair & makeup done before that time.

-When I'm taking the detail/dress photographs, please have the bridesmaids get dressed (I'll remind everyone).

-Please keep the rooms clean & organized. I know there will be tons of food, drinks, clothes, shoes & makeup bags laying around, but a clean room will help the photographs look so much better!

-Please pick a well lit, large area to get ready in. I strongly encourage brides & grooms to avoid getting ready in basements or extremely dark areas.

-Have your bridesmaids pack everything up for you: Hairspray, bobby pins, and everything else that goes in your wedding day emergency kit - make sure your bridesmaids take care of packing all of that up for you. They’ll be ready first, so they’ll have plenty of time to get everything together for you while we do first looks.

-Right after your ceremony (before dismissal or your receiving line), I always tell brides to take off their veil - friends and family hugging you consistently will pull on the veil and make it extremely uncomfortable (and could ruin your hair)!

-Remember to SMILE & GIGGLE! Enjoy your day! Kiss your hubby any time you want! Even sneak out for 5 minutes to get some alone time for just the two of you to soak in the moment!

for the groom:

-Avoid wearing a hat the morning of your wedding (I know, I know - but it can leave marks on your forehead!)

-When I'm taking the detail photographs, please have the groomsmen get dressed (I'll remind everyone). Have the guys get fully dress (coat/shoes/ties) but I'll let them know that they can take coats off temporarily after images are done.

-Please keep the rooms clean & organized. I know there will be tons of food, drinks, clothes & shoes laying around, but a clean room will help the photographs look so much better!

-Remember to SMILE & GIGGLE! Enjoy your day! Kiss your wife any time you want! Even sneak out for 5 minutes to get some alone time for just the two of you to soak in the moment!

extra tips to take your wedding to the next level:

-Have bridesmaids in matching robes

-Write letters to each other to read the morning of your big day

-(Brides) do a "reveal" to your bridesmaids

-(Brides) do a first look with your dad

-Have a phone/tablet free ceremony. It absolutely breaks my heart when I miss shots due to guests blocking my view with cellphones or tablets! Have the pastor announce that it's a device free ceremony. And have him repeat it. And repeat it again :)

-DON'T instruct your bridal party to stop and smile at me for a posed photo while coming down the aisle (I've had pastors instruct this a few times, and didn't I realize it until it was too late). It creates awkward pauses and the images never look "authentic". Instead tell them to smile at the guests and the groom while walking down the aisle!

-Make your first kiss as husband & wife at the alter extra long (picking the bride up, dipping & fist pumps during the first kiss are ALWAYS encouraged!)

-Ask your pastor to step to the side as soon as they announce "you may now kiss the bride." Having a clear backdrop behind you two will really make the images stand out!

-Remember to smile at each other, at your guests and at me while walking back down the aisle as newlyweds.

-An extra kiss when you are midway walking back down the aisle is always picture perfect!

-I encourage my couples to not have the DJ announce when we do the cake cutting. It's typically in a small area and can quickly get too cluttered with friends & family making it extremely difficult to photograph.

-PLEASE tell the DJ to NOT use colorful lights during the first dance. This is HUGE. It makes it incredibly difficult to edit and usually there's no saving a photo that has green/pink/blue dots all over your faces.

-Encourage parents to take children off the dance floor for first dances. Have the kids sit around the perimeter of the dance floor to watch the first dances instead!
