tips & trickS
to rock your equine
Mini Sessions are so much fun and a great way to get a variety of photographs with your horse - but they do go quick, so I've put together all of my tips & tricks so you can get the most out of your session!
how to get your horse ready:
MY #1 TIP FOR YOU: PLEASE LUNGE YOUR HORSE BEFORE OUR SESSION!
While I have a ton of tricks to get the best angles & attention the of your horse during our session, ultimately your horse’s attitude will determine how much we can get out of the session.
Happy/tired horse = more poses & photos!
Exercising your horse to the point of being tired will make a big difference; that's the number one piece of advice I can give you beforehand! Horses ALWAYS perk up when we take them out for photos. We're usually taking them to places they don't normally go and away from the barn & their herd - so they will usually act different than normal. Skipping exercising your horse beforehand not only hurts your chances of getting the most out of your photo shoot, it can make our fun photo shoot dangerous! If I feel your horse is too excited I will suggest we move to a new location or even ask you to lunge your horse a bit. I want you and your horse to be safe, so please work them well until they are very tired!
Another trick: EXERCISE YOUR HORSE WITHIN 1-2 HOURS BEFORE THE START OF OUR SESSION. AFTER THEY ARE WORKED & CLEANED, TIE THEM IN A STALL WITH A FAN & SOME HAY - THEN GO GET YOURSELF DRESSED & READY!
PHOTO SHOOT CHECKLIST:
-Mane is braided/banded
-Bridle path, eyes, nose & feet are clipped
-Horse is clean & stain free
-Tail is in
-Fly spray is applied & on hand
-Halter/bridle swaps are close by if needed
-Tack is clean & photo ready
Thinking of adding face grease? Opt for baby oil instead & use about half the amount you would in the show ring. If your horse is known to touch you a lot, skipping face grease/baby oil will be better than getting your clothes covered in grease!
Showmanship chain leads aren't the most flattering in photographs. I encourage clients to use a neutral colored or leather lead (with no chain) instead. I do bring a leather lead with me incase you need one!
Please have fly spray on hand. We'll most likely be needing to apply it over & over throughout our session. I also suggest apply bug spray to yourself to avoid getting bit!
what to wear:
AVOID NEON COLORS: Neons are difficult to photograph and usually aren't flattering colors against skin or with your horse.

during your shoot:
Before we start, make sure to mention any specific poses or shots you are hoping to get (example: if you need trot/lope shots for advertising). If you have a specific location in mind to take images, let me know about those ideas too!
BACKGROUNDS I LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH BY:
-LARGE DOORWAYS FOR BLACK BACKGROUNDS
-TALL GRASSY AREAS
-LARGE TREES CREATING SHADE
- TREE LINES TO THE WEST OR EAST
(I like to photograph with the sun behind my clients, so depending on the time of day we photograph during, we'll photograph in shade)
I'll direct you into the pose I want - so don't worry about what to do in front of the camera! Since we are working with horses, a lot of the poses are very candid "go with the flow" type shots. Horses move a lot which gives me different angles to work with - but if I see something isn't working I'll position you into a flattering pose!
After your session:
After your photo shoot, please allow up to 4 weeks to receive your gallery. If you need images by a certain date, please email me with your timeframe (rush fees may apply).
Your Mini Session will be delivered to the email address you signed your contract with, so keep an eye out for your gallery in your inbox.
From your online gallery, you will see all of your edited watermarked images. Screen shots are prohibited and will result in fines, so please refrain from taking screen shots in your gallery. Once you purchase an image (printed or digital) you'll receive an unwatermarked version if it.
How to download your included 4 High Resolution Images: hover your mouse over the image you'd like > click the shopping cart > click Digital Media > choose the "High Resolution" option > continue to checkout > enter the code given when your gallery was emailed to you. Once completed the images will download to your computer.
How to download your entire gallery: hover your mouse over the image you'd like > click the shopping cart > click Digital Media > choose the "High Resolution All Gallery Photos" option > continue to checkout. Clients who purchase their entire gallery will have a blog post featured on my website, instagram & facebook.
How to shop additional products: hover your mouse over the image you'd like > click the shopping cart > choose from Prints, Digitals, Canvas & Metals > pick your products > continue to checkout. Printed products will be shipping directly to your house, digital images will download to your computer.
I highly encourage clients to view their images on a computer vs a phone. When downloading or purchasing your images ONLY use a computer. Downloading images to your phone will greatly hurt the image quality and size, which can cause issue when printing your images. Images are edited on a color corrected monitor, the screen you are viewing images on may not accurately display the true colors and tones of the images. Prints ordered through Rachel Reilly Photography directly will always be color corrected and display the true colors and tones of the image.
HIGH RESOLUTION vs LOW RESOLUTION DIGITALS
High Resolution: you gain social media, website, printing & personal advertisement rights. These images are yours to use as you'd like forever!
Low Resolution: you gain social media & website usage rights. These images cannot be printed or used in advertisements.
